| Louise Wilson vs Cathy Horyn vs Fashion |

http://leonofnewyork.com/blog/?p=466 It’s taken me a while to really dissect and digest every little nuance of this article recently printed in The New York Times earlier this week. Fashion Critic for the NY Times Cathy Horyn talks with Central St. Martin’s director of M.A. studies Louise Wilson, who proceeds to rip the fashion industry (and the wave of new designers) a new one.
Though the interview is not that long, I had to resist quoting almost the entire thing because there are so many good tidbits. There are, however, a few that spoke out to me:
“I think the problem is that fashion has become too fashionable. For years, fashion wasn’t fashionable. Today fashion is so fashionable that it’s almost embarrassing to say you’re part of fashion. All the parodies of it. All the dreadful magazines. That has destroyed it as well, because everybody thinks fashion is attainable.”
“Most of them have no opinion. They do the work so well, and so diligently, and who cares? There are loads of people already doing it. They take no risks about anything, not even the way they go up against the industry or show their clothes. It’s all about being professional.”
For me, the problem with many aspiring fashion designers I see now is their chase for the celebrity. The designer as a profession has become so sexy that everyone is trying to be the next Proenza or Marc instead of trying to perfect themselves. Not only that, but the availalbility of information these days through the internet has spread trends worldwide faster than you can track where it all started. Is this a good thing? In my opinion, not really. The trickle down/bubble up nature of fashion has sped up so much that style is often overflowing with medicore renditions of great ideas. Quick, how many guides to stud your clothes/shoes/bag have you found on fashion blogs? Probably too many to count on both your hands and feet.
This creates another problem for the aspiring designer, one that I have personal experience with. Because fashion is such a part of pop culture now, especially with low end high design brands like H&M and Topshop, there is an extremely large amount of pressure to compete with these brands. We see their ability to produce decent looking clothing at affordable prices we trick ourselves into thinking that this is the best route to go (financially and often creatively), not realizing that these brands are nothing more than Xerox machines of style. Washed out dispposable half-ideas churned out for the quick buck. Choosing to submit to this machine is discrediting your own abilities and the point of being a designer, having a personal opinion.
“It might be very good for fashion if fashion goes out of fashion, and maybe nothing does happen for awhile and a few companies shut down. When the light turns away that’s when the new work will be done.”

| Not So Summery/Little Bunny Miku |
[10 Jul 2009|06:46pm] |
|
http://keikolynn.blogspot.com/2009/07/not-so-summerylittle-bunny-miku.html
You'll have to forgive my sporadic updates; between painting, moving and this infection I'm fighting, I've been a bit preoccupied. I haven't been able to wear really cute clothing, because my left arm is twice its usual size (down to the elbow) and hurts like no other. I have good days and bad days; the last couple of days were awful! I had a fever and horrible chills and the pain was unbearable. I am on antibiotics, but the doctor's expectations are pretty low. He wants to refer me to a surgeon. Lovely! I don't have insurance. What to do?
Keep your fingers crossed that it's not too late for antibiotics to clear this up. At the very least, I'm happy that my fever broke. In the meantime, here are some pictures from a week or so ago, before the infection spread like wildfire:)

One of my favorite necklaces, the little bunny necklace from Anirtak. It's my Peanutty necklace. Nunner Bunner (one of the many nicknames I had for Peanutty) always lives on in my heart, but I keep her pictures on the wall and random little bunny trinkets around, so she's always near me.

On this day, I changed outfits three times. This was the first outfit. It doesn't look very summery, but that's because it was not a summery day. It was chilly and rainy, when I woke up. As we took these pictures, it started to warm up, so I changed into a different outfit. Later on, I changed into a dress for dinner. Kind of ridiculous!
Outfit Details: lace slip (I just realized I've had this since freshman year of college...weird) wrap knit top - Express (also really old) thrifted belt vintage purse (from my mom) thrifted skirt h&m skirt (worn under the other skirt for fullness/to keep the skirt from flying up) gap tights vintage heels bunny necklace from Anirtak Speaking of bunnies - did you know that I almost named Miku "Bunny"? I named our cat "Puppy," when I was five. I thought it would be cute to name her Bunny, since I had a Peanutty bunny at the time. Plus, she looked like a little bunny. My mom vetoed the name. I still call her Bunny, from time to time, but it's just a term of endearment that I use for most animals (and Kimbly). This was really more of an excuse to post cute pictures of the little babies. Miku and Vester are best buds. Excuse Miku's ratty looking coat - I guess I didn't brush her that day! I felt bad for Lacy, because she's always left out. Bobby favors Vester, and so does Miku! My friends and I all give her extra attention, just to make up for it. In other news, you may have noticed the lack of Postlapsaria updates. That's because I haven't been able to photograph the clothes! I don't want to get my gross infected arm all over the clothing. I was waiting for it to clear up, but I guess I'm going to have to photograph them hanging on a form or something. Antibiotics, please clear this up! It's getting so old. -Keiko Lynn p.s. I just checked and the bunny (Lone Hopper) necklace is still available at Anirtak's Etsy, and it's only $10!

Sprinkles or no sprinkles? See below!!
Also please excuse extra weird video. I was blindly recording with the digi cam (I usually use Photobooth) so I had no idea if I was actually in the frame or not. Hahah!
Cake Box from Twinkie Chan on Vimeo.
This is a “sketch” I did in photoshop before I started work in order to figure out the colors. As you can see, I initially did put sprinkles on it, but I am sort of leaning toward no sprinkles now…. hmmm!!!
Also here are some doggie vids from yesterday.
Here is Bibi eating her foot and Bunny saying hi with her butt.
Untitled from Twinkie Chan on Vimeo.
And moments after, here is Bibi checking out what’s on TV.

| Cast Away Needle Felting Class This Weekend |
[10 Jul 2009|10:00am] |
|
http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2009/07/cast_away_needle_felting_class.html?CMP=OTC-5JF307375954
I love stylish yarn shops, especially when they have a well-rounded schedule of classes and contests. Cast Away is one of these shops. It's a lovely and welcoming space in Historic Railroad Square in Santa Rosa, Calif. A wooden ship in the store holds skeins, and stunning vintage chairs provide a space to work. All this against a chic brick wall backdrop. Justine Malone informed me of a needle felting class there this weekend, and of the needle felting contest they're currently running. I want to sail over there in a yarn-filled boat across a sea of wool.

Create a piece of art with needle felting. Make a landscape a portrait or just go abstract! Bring in an image to work from or just work from your mind. Supplies included but you might want to buy some extra needles and a foam mat (sold at Cast Away) to take home with you. Monica Ashley-Najmabadi has been teaching needle felting for 10+ years and she is really sweet and fun!
Saturday July 11, 10:30-1:30. $40 with supplies included at 111 4th Street, Santa Rosa, Calif. (707) 546-YARN
